Inhabiting one of the only remaining buildings from the 1964 New York World’s Fair, the New York Hall of Science (NYSCI) is a hands-on science museum in Flushing Meadows-Corona Park. SITU STUDIO designed the architecture of Design Lab, a sequence of five activity areas including Sandbox, Backstage, Studio, Treehouse, and Maker Space, to host an assortment of project based learning activities. They chose to use Capri Cork ReTire, which is made from recycled SBR tires and EPDM rubber granules, and Capri Cork Mediterra. The purpose of Design Lab’s construction is to play a part in critical discovery and to encourage questioning and experimentation. Design lab’s flexibility can cater to the events it will host today and to what it will host in the future.
